The Inventor of the Anvil Pruner

LOWE holds a place in gardening history. In 1923, Walther Schröder patented the world’s first anvil pruner, the Original LOWE 1. The design used a draw-cut blade working against a fixed anvil, producing a lighter and cleaner cut than anything else available at the time. Just as importantly, the original design used replaceable wear parts, so a pruner could be maintained instead of thrown away.

More Than 100 Years of German Cutting Expertise

LOWE is still family-owned and still manufactured at its own facility in Flintbek, in northern Germany. The Lion on Gearwheel trademark, first registered in 1925, has appeared on pruners used by professional gardeners, viticulturists, orchardists and foresters around the world. In 2023 LOWE celebrated its centenary and was named among the Great German Brands of 2025.
